Website Redesign: 5 Ways to Know It’s Time

There’s a good chance you invested some serious money in your website. And I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if that was five or six years ago it might be time for a new website. There are, of course, exceptions to that rule. Most notably if your website provider offers updates to your site to keep it fresh. But if you launched your site and let it site for half-a-decade, then you should seriously consider looking into investing in a new site for your business.

The internet is a fast-moving place, and a set-it-and-forget-it mentality will quickly get you left behind. Maintaining a web presence means moving with the latest in trends and technology (that’s why we offer free website edits with our packages, but that is another topic for another day). Representing your brand with a website that is outdated is a quick way to drive away business – don’t let that be you!

Time for a New Website?

Migrating to a new website isn’t the easiest task – so you should make sure you really need it before taking the plunge. Today, we’ll look at the top five ways to know it is time for a website redesign:

1. Non-Responsive Design

According to Wikipedia, responsive web design “is an approach to web design which makes web pages render well on a variety of devices and window or screen sizes.” Basically, it means that your website automatically adjusts to the screen size – whether it is a phone, tablet, or monitor.

If your website was built before 2015, there is a good change your design is not responsive. And Google is continuing to penalize non-responsive websites in their rankings – something that be devastating to a business. Check the responsiveness of your website by opening it on a variety of screens and see how it reacts.

2. Bounce Rates

A bounce happens when someone clicks a link to visit your site but moves on within just a few seconds. There are several legitimate reasons someone can bounce from your site (accidental link clicks being the primary), but a high bounce rate is a sign that something is wrong.

If you dive into your Google Analytics and find that you’re seeing an increase in bounces, it might be a sign that you’re due for a website update. Especially if your website is built on outdated tech like Flash or features content that is clearly dated.

3. Security

Online security is an increasingly important topic – and your lack of security could be hurting your reputation. HTTPS was strictly for e-commerce sites, but it is now expected across a wide variety of sites to ensure page authenticity, secure login info, and identity privacy.

While HTTPS isn’t a necessity for every page, it is the future of the internet. If you still running an unsecured site, transferring to HTTPS should be on your radar.

4. Dated Style

Style matters – especially when it comes to creating trust with your audience. If your website looks like it was built in 1998 with Angelfire, you’re not likely to win the trust of your customers. Sometimes it hard to be honest with yourself, but take a good look at your site. How does it look?

If viewing your site brings back memories of watching Friends and listening to Savage Garden, then you definitely need a new site. Trends and styles change rapidly in our digital world, so don’t get left behind with a dated design!

5. Evolving Business

Sometimes things don’t always grow the way we expect. Most businesses will shift their focus as they grow and develop – is your website growing along with you? An old website can mislead customers about what you do – and that can cost new clients.

If your website no longer lines up with your business goals, then a new website can get the two back into alignment. Don’t send your customers on a wild-goose chase with outdated information!
