The Do’s and Don’ts of Writing Titles

So, whether you post things on social media or write blogs for your business website, you’re going to have to come up with titles and headlines that attract people’s attention. According to Copyblogger, 8 out of 10 people will read the headline but only 2 will actually read the content. This doesn’t necessarily apply to social media posting, but if you’re posting blogs or any other piece of information on social media, if you’re title isn’t engaging you’re not going to get that many readers. Here are some things you should do, and some things to avoid.

Do:

  • Copyblogger suggests minding the 4 U’s: Useful, Urgent, Unique, and Ultra-Specific
  • Ask yourself if there is a reward in store for the reader. Is there an incentive to reading your post? This doesn’t have to be a tangible incentive, but understanding what your followers are interested in and writing something that will make them feel the information is relevant to them is important.
  • Ask your audience questions. If you’re asking them a question, it implies that you have some sort of suggestion or solution, and this could be intriguing to people.
  • Use positive, action-oriented language.
  • Use active wording, make sure you’re using engaging language that gets people interested in taking action and reading your content.

Don’t:

  • Be too wordy. Nothing is worse than a long title that loses people’s interest halfway through. Good rule of thumb is less than 100 characters.
  • Use active wording, make sure you’re using engaging language that gets people interested in taking action and reading your content.
  • Don’t make promises you can’t keep! Make sure that your title highlights what is in the content – people don’t want to be suckered into reading something that isn’t even related to the title.
  • Write boring titles! Try and spice it up a little. If you’re having a hard time, phrase it in a question or give out a fact from your content. Ask other people for their opinion before posting.
  • Don’t forget to include an eye-catching image!

Overall, be sure that you keep it short, sweet, and engaging. You want your readers to be excited to read your post and content simply by reading the title. This goes for blog posts, social media, or even advertising.
